Khao Lak & The Similan Islands
Three years after the Asian tsunami hit its coast, Khao Lak, in Southern Thailand is once again thriving as a tourist destination. Resorts have been rebuilt and diving operators are busy shuttling divers and snorkelers over to the nearby Similan Islands. Khao Lak was one of the hardest hit areas in Thailand and rebuilding the local tourism industry was no easy task. Determined locals and foreign volunteers as well as hotel owners, worked hard to bring the area back to life. The local tourism industry has seen some changes, with more volunteer-based tourism and eco tourism available, one volunteer center even offers a "tsunami tour"
